Chapter 6

“SO YOU got yourself a job,” his grandfather said from the screen in the lawyer’s conference room. “You worked for an entire month.” In this recording he seemed visibly a little older than he had in the previous one. His eyes held a little less of their usual energy, and he breathed more heavily, as though he were out of breath. “Did you give Lydia an accounting of what you made and how much you had left?”

“Yes,” Brian answered softly without thinking.

“Not much, was it? People work hard, and between taxes and the necessities of life, there isn’t much left in the end. That’s reality, Brian, and something you’ve been given. But make no mistake, I worked hard, very hard, when I was your age, and I saved my money so I could try to put it to work for me. I learned what I could from everyone around me, took it all in, and then used it to get what I wanted. But hard work was always in the mix. Never forget that if you work hard at whatever you do, success can follow. Without hard work, nothing ever comes to anyone.”

The screen went blank, and Brian slowly turned his chair to face Lydia. Whatever his grandfather had in mind, he seemed to be leaving that up to her.

Brian knew his grandfather, but he was still trying to figure out the woman who sat across from him. “What’s next?”

There was no file in front of her. It was just the two of them in the conference room. Her hands were folded, resting on the table.

“You were given two hundred and fifty dollars per week and told to get a job, which you seem to have done. Judging from the uncashed checks in front of me, you managed to make it through.” Her expression showed that she’d had her doubts.

“I had some friends—well, a friend—who helped me,” Brian answered, growing wary. He’d managed to support himself and had contributed to the rent.

Lydia slowly drummed her fingers on the table, saying nothing. She seemed to be waiting.

“What do you want me to say?”

“It isn’t me who’s important. Say what you want to say.”

“You mean like some grade-school report. What I did on my summer vacation,” Brian said as sarcastically as he could.

“What do you want to do with this?” she asked.

Brian shrugged.

“You do realize that these checks and the one you will receive in a week represent almost a month of your work. Doesn’t that have any value to you?” She folded her hands once again.

“I don’t know. I did what he asked,” Brian said, motioning toward the screen. “I learned that people have to work for money, and I still have the job. Is that what he wants, for me to live on the street? I’m staying with a friend, but I honestly don’t know how much longer I can do that.”

“I’m well aware of where you’re living and with whom. I also know that you took him to your uncle’s party a week or so ago and that the family was less than impressed.
